Episode Notes

What separates elite performers from everyone else when pressure is at its highest? Dr. Eric Potterat believes mental toughness comes from understanding what you can control, managing your thoughts and deliberately training the skills that help you perform through adversity.

Dr. Eric Potterat joins Creative Planning President and CEO Peter Mallouk on Icons and Ideas to explore the psychology behind peak performance, resilience and mental toughness. After serving 20 years in the U.S. Navy, including a decade working with Navy SEALs, Eric helped develop an assessment that could identify candidates unlikely to complete BUD/S training with 97% accuracy and helped create a structured mental toughness program for SEAL candidates.

Eric shares how these same principles later translated to professional sports, including his work with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and explains what Navy SEALs, elite athletes, executives and other high performers have in common. Peter and Eric also discuss overcoming slumps, managing stress, separating identity from performance and why the most successful people focus their energy on attitude, effort and actions they can control.

Key Takeaways

🔹 Mental toughness can be trained. Eric’s work with Navy SEALs showed that evidence-based techniques can help people perform more effectively in high-stakes environments.

🔹 Reframe failure instead of fearing it. Elite performers learn to keep setbacks in perspective, focus on the process and avoid allowing one failure to define what happens next.

🔹 Identity should be bigger than performance. Eric warns that elite performers can struggle when their self-identity becomes completely tied to what they do.

🔹 Focus on what you can control. Eric’s “stay in the circle” principle centers on three things people can always control: attitude, effort and actions.
